Where to Celebrate Chinese New Year in Style

One of the world’s favorite holidays is quickly approaching and if you don’t know where to go in Jakarta to eat in the name of prosperity, we’ve got a list of some of the best luxury hotel options in our fair city — and beyond.

Also known as Chinese New Year (or Imlek in Indonesia) the year of the horse’s rule starts on Jan. 31, 2014.

At Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta, the hotel’s Cantonese Chinese restaurant Shang Palace will become the heart of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Shang Palace offers three exclusive Chinese New Year set menus for guests to enjoy from Jan. 30 to Feb. 14 ranging from Rp. 988,000 to Rp. 1,988,000 per person (plus taxes and fees).

On Jalan Gatot Subroto at Crowne Plaza Jakarta gather your friends and family members for a celebration to mark the end of Lunar calendar and to welcome the new year with sizzling dishes like Peking duck, drunken chicken, jellyfish with sesame oil, Chinese BBQ platter and more.

To complete the festive cheer, Crowne Plaza also has a lion dance performance from 7 p.m. onwards on January 30, with the acrobatic stunts taking place in the hotel’s main lobby.

On the 46th floor of the prestigious Plaza office tower at Altitude Jakarta, Chinese New Year celebrations will include the finest 360 degree views of the city and a pan-Asian twist — Japanese fare. On January 30 and 31, for Rp. 888,000 per person (plus taxes and fees), enjoy a specially created Japanese set menu which includes Japanese yu sheng salad, wagyu shabu-shabu and kudamono moriawase — a delectable selection of seasonal fruits — at Altitude’s ambient Japanese restaurant Enmaru.

Another option to enjoy a traditional Chinese New Year Dinner is Intercontinental Hotel’s Rasa Restaurant, which on Thursday Jan. 30 is offering set menus from Rp. 350,000 per person (plus taxes and fees). Delicacies include rainbow jelly fish, Peking duck, steamed white snapper with light soy sauce and traditional orange mandarin. There will be live cooking stations showcasing the expertise of our culinary team as well as a performance of the Lion Dance as a symbol of prosperity for the coming year.

Signatures Restaurant at Hotel Indonesia Kempinski invites the capital to welcome the Chinese New Year by throwing a feast from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2 prepared exclusively by its Executive Chinese Chef Albert Liew. During this festivity, the hotel also encourages its guests to join their charity program called Donate Your Luck to support Yayasan Sekolah Kartini, an underprivileged primary and middle school in Mangga Besar.

Guests are solicited to purchase an angpao (red envelope) at Rp. 100,000 each. These envelopes are filled with various vouchers to win. The grand prize is a one-night stay at the Presidential Suite valued at Rp. 182 million. All of the proceeds will be donated and topped with additional contribution Rp. 8,880,000 from Hotel Indonesia Kempinski.

From Jan. 16 Mandarin Oriental Jakarta has been abuzz with festivities as it welcomes the year of the horse. From delectable dining options for the entire family to enjoy and a prosperous ceremony conducted by feng shui master, Joseph Chau from Hong Kong to a magnificent Chinese New Year entertainments, all prepared for another incredible celebration.

The horse represents freedom, nobility and power, and to start off the festivities, Xin Hwa restaurant presents delectable dining options as executive Chinese chef Jeff Lee and his culinary team combine traditional and innovative ingredients to create three signature family set menus that will be offered from Jan. 16 to Feb. 14.

The set menu served daily is priced from Rp. 688,000 per person to Rp. 1,388,000 per person.

In celebration and welcoming the change of Chinese Lunar Calendar Year, Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort presents delectable feast from Jan.27 until Feb. 9 at Rp. 270,000 (plus taxes and fees) per adult including Chinese Green Tea only at Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort’s signature dining: Feast – a restaurant serving multi-cuisine concept and vibrant dining experiences.

Lunar New Year or Spring Festival brings Sheraton Bali Kuta Resort inspiration to present an authentic tradition with delicious dishes.

Westin Bali on Jan. 31 will welcome Chinese New Year with an uplifting buffet dinner (at Rp. 500,000 per person plus taxes and fees) of festive fare that the entire family will enjoy. There will be a special performance of the dragon dance to bring good luck for the year of the horse in accordance with the ancient Chinese calendar system.

Traditional angpao envelopes will be distributed with vouchers offering 20 percent discount on food and non-alcoholic beverages at The Veranda and Ikan restaurants for the following day’s enjoyment.

In Medan, at Santika Premiere Dyandra Hotel & Convention Center, on January 31 the hotel is offering a variety of set menu packages with per person rates of Rp. 150,000 and table rates ranging from Rp. 699,000 upwards. In keeping with the hotel’s flare for unique dishes the food presented will be unique, including such dishes as coffee chicken.

At the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta, as part of the regular night markets at the classic hotel, a collaboration of Ramayana Dance and Barongsai will be happening for one night only on Feb. 1. This will be a poolside celebration with a special Chinese New Year’s dinner.
